The use of a Directory Service allows the login and security credentials of your users to be stored and managed centrally on a Server.
This has the advantage that a person can log into different computers on your network using the same username and password and carry on working. There are many advantages to this, including shared working, shared resources and non-reliance on specific hardware.
The most widely deployed solution for Directory Services is Microsoft’s Active Directory.
